Fans who will brave the bitterly cold and wet weather to watch the Springboks’ 2025 season opener against the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium on Saturday have been encouraged to make use of the expanded free Park & Ride service.
Rain storms have battered Cape Town this week, with flooding reported all over the city. The adverse weather is set to continue this weekend, with a 70% chance of rain with a temperature of around 12 degrees expected during the match.
With more than 40,000 spectators expected for the match, the City of Cape Town has urged fans to stay off the roads to avoid congestion and possible motor vehicle accidents as a result of the weather and the many cars on the roads.
The City is encouraging fans to park their cars outside of the stadium precinct and use the MyCity bus service, which will be running throughout Saturday.
“We are anticipating more than 40,000 spectators for this game, which will affect traffic on match day. To reduce congestion and help fans get to the stadium on time, we've worked closely with the event organiser to provide alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.
“We strongly encourage all spectators to make use of the park-and-ride system, which is a convenient and reliable way to avoid delays and ensure a smooth journey to the venue. The shuttle, with its dedicated lane to the stadium, will ensure that you beat the traffic and get to the stadium smoothly.”
Stadium gates for this Saturday’s game are expected to open at noon, with the free MyCiTi shuttle service for spectators ferrying matchday ticket holders from Century City, CTICC, Thibault Square and Civic Centre stations.
The first shuttles from all designated Park & Ride sites will depart at noon, with return services operating until 9.30pm.
A designated e-hailing drop-off and pick-up area will also be located at P13 on Green Point Main Road, between York Road and Wigtown Road.
With rain expected on the day, spectators need to get creative to keep themselves dry as no umbrellas are allowed inside the stadium. People are encouraged to bring their rain jackets.
No spectators will be allowed to take food or drink into the stadium. There is also no 'braaing' allowed anywhere in the stadium precinct, including all public and parking areas. However, this may anyway not be a problem because of the rain.
With Klipdrift extending their partnership with the Boks, there will be a brandy to go with the cold drinks, beers and ciders sold at the match. For those who prefer a warm beverage, various coffee vendors will also be on site.
Spectators also are urged to be aware of the threat of car jamming in parking areas and pickpockets and keep their valuables close at all times.
However, the most important thing on the day is to just be 'lekker', respect each other and bring the gees!
