The Springbok Women returned from Madagascar with three victories, a trophy, and clear progress in their Rugby World Cup preparations.
South Africa beat Uganda, Kenya, and host nation Madagascar to claim the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup title. In the process, the team reached their targets whilst simultaneously giving several new players international experience.
Assistant coach Franzel September said the coaching staff were satisfied with how the team followed through on their objectives.
“We came here with a clear view of what we wanted out of the tournament,” said September. “It was part of our World Cup plans, but also a chance for the players to express themselves.”
Several uncapped players were included in the squad. September said they earned their call-ups through strong performances in the provincial competitions and proved their worth on tour.
“One of the players thanked the coaches with tears in her eyes for the opportunity,” he said. “We gave them a chance, and they used it.”
He also noted the successful integration of sevens players into the system and gave credit to the experienced players returning from the last World Cup.
Captain Anathi Qolo said the new players stepped up and the team took valuable lessons from the tournament.
“This was not an easy competition,” said Qolo. “We were tested, and we had to work hard for the results.”
Speaking after the 61-17 win over Madagascar, Qolo said their defensive strategy paid off. “We expected them to attack wide. We planned to force them back into our forwards, and it worked.”
The Springbok Women leave Madagascar unbeaten, with a title in hand and progress made on all fronts.
