Following an impressive stay in Kimberley, Sako Makata will be leaving Griquas as he returns to the Stormers following his loan spell. And he is just one of a handful who will be moving on.

The Suzuki Griquas wrapped up an otherwise impressive SA Cup campaign with a stumble in the final, where they were beaten by a fired-up Pumas side.
Up to that point, the Griquas had looked sharp, their combinations clicking and game plans humming along like a well-oiled machine. But with the SA Cup now in the rear-view mirror and the Currie Cup looming, the focus shifts – and so too will the squad – as several players bid farewell to Kimberley.
This week, Griquas extended their sincerest gratitude and fondest farewells to five players who are moving on to new chapters in their rugby careers after serving the team with pride.
Sako Makata returns to the Stormers following his loan spell, Marcqiewn Titus heads to Boland, and Junior Banda has been recruited by the Pumas. Meanwhile, Dylan Sjöblom gets a chance to roar with the Lions, and Thabo Ndimande will be joining the ranks of the Worcester Warriors.
As these players take their next steps, the Griqualand West Rugby Union publicly thanked them for their commitment and contributions during their time in the Griquas jersey.
“Your dedication to the Griquas jersey will not be forgotten, and we wish you all continued success in your future endeavours,” read a statement.
In the build-up to this farewell, the Union flew out its non-playing squad to be part of the matchday experience in Mbombela during the SA Cup final two weeks ago – a gesture that didn’t go unnoticed.
Coach Peter Bergh expressed his appreciation at the time, saying:
“Thanks to the board for making that possible. It shows what this team is about. We want everyone who contributed this season to be part of the final.”
In the days leading up to the game, Bergh also acknowledged the significance of the moment:
“This is our last game together as a group. Some players have served this union with distinction. That gives us extra motivation – we want to send them off with something special.”
While the result on the day didn’t allow for a storybook send-off, the presence of those departing players on the sidelines added emotional weight to the occasion. It was a reminder that a team’s strength lies not just in results, but in the culture it builds and the bonds it leaves behind.
And for those moving on, the memories of their time in Kimberley – the highs, the brotherhood, the Griquas jersey – will surely travel with them.
