FOR THE past decade, Boitumelo Mmereki has been a familiar and dedicated presence on the greens of Jan Kempdorp Golf Club, faithfully supporting golfers as a caddie. But recently, Boitumelo experienced a milestone that changed the way he sees himself and the game he loves.
Boitumelo has been caddying for local golfing talent and Managing Director of the Clive Korope Golf Development Academy for the past six months. This relationship reached a memorable turning point when Clive decided to cover the visitor fees and invite Boitumelo to play a round alongside him, not as a caddie, but as a fellow player.
“It was a great day on the golf course with Mr. Korope, and I appreciated it a lot to play with them on the day,” Boitumelo reflected after the round. “I felt like one of them.”
Clive Korope described the day as “special,” noting the excitement and nervousness Boitumelo carried as the game began. “This was not just another round; it was a chance for him to play alongside his white bosses, whom he had caddied for many times. The opportunity to showcase his skills on the same course as them was thrilling yet nerve-wracking.”
At the tee, Boitumelo’s anxiety was evident in his fidgeting hands and glances toward the first tee, but Clive encouraged him to focus on enjoying the game and putting his knowledge and experience into practice. When Boitumelo stepped up to strike the ball, the nervousness melted away into a confident, smooth swing that sent the ball soaring down the fairway.
What followed was a round filled with laughter, shared stories, and a genuine camaraderie that transformed the day from a simple game into a moment of personal triumph. “Boitumelo’s nervousness transformed into confidence as he played alongside his bosses,” said Clive.
By the end of the round, Boitumelo had not only proven his golfing ability but also embraced a new identity, not just as a caddie but as a player, fully part of the game he had supported for so many years.
“The sparkle in his eyes as we left the course was unforgettable,” Clive said. “That experience will stay with him forever.”
For Boitumelo Mmereki and Jan Kempdorp Golf Club, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the opportunities sport can offer, not just for competition but for inclusion. respect, and personal growth. It also highlights the importance of recognising the talent and passion that caddies bring to the game, often from behind the scenes.
Boitumelo’s journey from caddie to player is inspiring many at Jan Kempdorp and beyond, a testament to dedication, perseverance, and the simple joy of playing golf.
