A physical altercation between two senior coaches at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) has sent shockwaves through the local rugby community, as police confirm an assault investigation is under way.

Former Griquas stalwart and current head coach of the SPU rugby team, Jonathan Francke, allegedly struck his assistant coach, Joseph Molale, during a heated dispute regarding player participation in upcoming Under-21 regional trials.

According to multiple sources close to the team, the altercation occurred after a disagreement between the two men escalated into a verbal confrontation that quickly turned physical. Francke, a respected figure in Northern Cape rugby circles, is accused of punching Molale in the face during the clash.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since confirmed that a case of assault has been opened.

“The Kimberley police are currently investigating a case of assault following an incident that allegedly took place between two men at a university rugby facility,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock. The investigation is ongoing.”

Molale, who is said to have sustained visible injuries, officially reported the incident shortly after it occurred. Molale went to the hospital shortly after for a CT scan.

The dispute reportedly stemmed from differing opinions between the coaches about whether or not their student-athletes should be allowed to participate in regional Under-21 trials. While one believed the trials would provide exposure and development opportunities for the players, the other reportedly feared it could possibly cause unnecessary injuries.

In the wake of the altercation, members of the SPU rugby coaching and management staff have resigned, with sources citing that they “cannot work with Francke under the current circumstances”.

“There’s been an uncomfortable tension building for weeks,” said a former member of the coaching setup who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This incident was the tipping point. Many of us feel it’s no longer a healthy environment.”

Cassie Carstens, the university's sports consultant, confirmed that an internal investigation is under way.

“We cannot comment further at this time while our internal processes unfold,” Carstens said.

This incident leaves a tainted mark on Francke, who has long been a well-respected figure in Kimberley’s rugby circles, having previously worn the Griquas jersey with distinction.

The university's rugby programme, particularly the first team under Francke’s leadership, has shown promise in the recent Varsity Shield competition. The incident now places the team’s progress and morale at risk, with many questioning whether leadership changes may be imminent.

The incident has also raised broader concerns about professionalism, mentorship, and player welfare at university-level rugby programmes in South Africa.

For now, the local rugby community waits with bated breath as both internal and police investigations continue.
