THE GROUNDS of Northern Cape High School came alive recently as they hosted Upington High School in a spirited interschool tournament that saw learners competing in hockey, rugby, and netball. The two schools, known for their passionate sports cultures, battled it out across two days in a display of talent, teamwork, and above all, sportsmanship.

From the very first whistle on Friday afternoon, it was clear that the weekend would not only be about the scores, but about pride, camaraderie and mutual respect between two institutions that understand the value of school sport in shaping young lives.

Hockey Highlights

The hockey fixtures kicked off on Friday with mixed results for both schools. Northern Cape High’s U16 girls set the tone with a commanding 4-0 victory, showing sharpness in front of goal and great tactical awareness. However, Upington struck back in the other matches, claiming wins in the U16B boys (2-0), U19B boys (3-0), and the U19B girls match (13-0), where they showed impressive cohesion and relentless attacking pressure.

Saturday saw more back-and-forth action, with Northern Cape High bouncing back strongly. The U19B girls turned the tables with a stunning 6-0 win, and the U16 boys secured a solid 3-0 victory. The U19A boys then added to the host school’s tally with a well-earned 4-1 win, while the U19A girls fought to a tightly contested 1-1 draw, reflecting the even nature of this budding rivalry.

It was not just about victory; the players shook hands, offered words of encouragement, and celebrated each other’s efforts throughout.

Rugged Rugby Duels

The rugby fields were no less electric. Upington High’s U14 team dominated early on with a resounding 62-0 win, displaying athleticism and flair. The U15s also secured a resounding win, beating Northern Cape High 43-21. The U16 encounter was a nail-biter, with Northern Cape edging it 19-15 and thrilling spectators with dramatic late tackles and brave carries.

One of the highlights came from the U19B match, where Northern Cape clinched a narrow 12-10 victory, thanks to gritty defence and sharp counter-attacks. In the first team showdown, both sides left everything on the field, but it was Upington who triumphed 21-14 in a high-intensity encounter.

While the competition was fierce, players congratulated each other respectfully at the final whistle, a reminder that rivalry need not compromise respect.

Knockout Netball

On the netball courts, Northern Cape High displayed excellent co-ordination and tactical precision. Though their U14s went down 25-8, the rest of the teams rallied with conviction. The U15s secured a convincing 17-4 win, while the U16s followed suit with a 24-5 victory.

The cherry on top came from the first team, who dazzled the home crowd with a dominant 42-20 performance.

Throughout the matches, players helped each other up, exchanged smiles, and clapped for good plays - proof that even in competition, there's room for grace.

More Than Just Sport

Interschool weekends like these are more than just sporting events. They are about building bridges between schools, offering learners a platform to express themselves, and creating lifelong memories.

Whether it was a celebration after a goal, a handshake after a hard tackle, or a cheer from the sidelines, this past weekend showcased what school sport is truly about - unity, growth, and good sportsmanship.
