The Witteput MTB Challenge is back for its third thrilling edition, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. Scheduled for Saturday, May 24, the event will once again unfold on the scenic Witteput Farm, nestled on the outskirts of the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme near Jan Kempdorp, in the heart of the Northern Cape.
Known for its unique blend of beautiful landscapes and tough terrain, the Witteput MTB Challenge is not just a race – it's an experience. Starting from the Futurum Akademie school grounds at 8am, riders will navigate through the rich farmlands of the Vaalharts region and venture deep into the rugged Marokkaanse Rante, conquering a well-marked trail designed to test endurance and celebrate the sport of mountain biking.
Participants can choose between a 40km or a more demanding 80km route.
Both options offer a carefully curated mix of gravel roads, double and single tracks, and the rocky climbs of the Marokkaanse Rante, with a total elevation gain of approximately 600 metres. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist looking to push your limits or someone seeking a new challenge, this course has something for everyone.
“This route is not just about speed; it's about embracing the raw beauty of our landscape,” said one of the organisers. “Every year, we focus on making the trail enjoyable and challenging, while ensuring safety and comfort for all riders.”
Each entrant will receive a goodie bag, and upon crossing the finish line, every rider will be rewarded with a finisher’s medal – a well-earned token for their efforts. For those gunning for the top spot, generous prize money awaits the front-runners in each race category.
In addition, a professional photographer will be stationed along the route to capture those unforgettable moments of grit, smiles, and triumph.
Medical assistance will be available throughout the event to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
But the Witteput MTB Challenge goes beyond being just a cycling race – it’s a family-friendly festival. With a kids' race (5km and 10km distances, registration on the day), live music, delicious food stalls, drinks, and a beer tent, there's plenty of entertainment for spectators and supporters.
“We’ve created a day where everyone – riders and families – can have fun. You don’t have to be on a bike to enjoy the Witteput experience,” another organiser added.
Registrations are now open, and spots are filling up fast. Cyclists are encouraged to secure their place via the official Witteput MTB Challenge website or through Quicket, Bike Hub, and other affiliated platforms.
So dust off your bike, lace up those shoes, and get ready for a day packed with adventure, scenery, community spirit, and good old-fashioned fun. The Witteput MTB Challenge awaits – are you ready to ride?
