A case of assault has been opened by the Kimberley South African Police Service (SAPS) following an altercation between two rugby coaches during a team training session earlier this week.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute over team selection and allegedly involved a well-known former Griquas player, who now coaches in the region. According to witnesses, tensions escalated during the practice session of a prominent Kimberley rugby team, resulting in a physical confrontation.

It is alleged that the disagreement intensified after an exchange of words, leading to the former Griquas player allegedly striking the other coach in full view of players and staff. The injured coach was later admitted to hospital for observation and treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been publicly disclosed.

The local rugby community has responded with dismay, particularly given the reputations of those involved. The accused is regarded as a respected figure in Northern Cape rugby and is known both for his contributions as a Griquas player and his ongoing work in developing young talent.

As this is a developing story, more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
