Fresh off unveiling their state-of-the-art Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport Hub in Kyalami, TGRSA is wasting no time in putting it to the test – heading straight into battle at the South African Safari Rally, the third round of the 2025 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).

The rally, which kicks off near Sun City in the North West Province, marks the W2RC’s first-ever event in Southern Africa and a major moment for both local motorsport and the team.

TGRSA will field two South African-built GR Hilux EVOs in this international contest. Dakar veteran Guy Botterill will drive one, with Dennis Murphy navigating, while rising star Saood Variawa teams up with French co-driver Francois Cazalet in the other.

In a nod to their African roots, the team’s race cars will sport a new beige livery inspired by traditional safari vehicles. “We’re racing in the bush – we wanted our cars to look the part,” said TGRSA Team Principal Shameer Variawa.

The rally stretches across five grueling stages and more than 2,600 km of terrain, from sandy tracks and rocky climbs to open farmland. A key highlight is the two-day “Marathon Stage”, where drivers are cut off from team support and must handle repairs themselves – testing not just speed, but survival skills.

Both Botterill and Variawa bring extensive local experience, and for TGRSA, this is more than just another race. It’s a showcase of their new facility, a home-ground challenge, and a chance to make their mark on the global stage.

“We’re proud to help bring the Safari Rally to life,” said Glenn Crompton, Toyota SA’s Vice-President of Marketing. “It’s about our passion for motorsport – and for our fans.”
