Jose Riveiro’s final match in charge of Orlando Pirates will be on Tuesday evening against Golden Arrows, the club confirmed in a statement on Monday.

While the club made the shock announcement last month that Riveiro would be leaving Pirates at the end of the season, it’s now emerged that he will leave even sooner. The Betway Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium will now be his last in the colours of Pirates.

In the statement from Pirates, it was also confirmed that Riveiro has already signed with a new club.

Jose Riveiro departs after successful tenure

“Jose approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club,” Pirates said in a statement.

“Given the timing; amidst a series of crucial fixtures – we believed it was best to delay this announcement until after the Nedbank Cup Final. His contribution since joining the Club has been immense. We learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us.

“While we would have preferred to formally honour him with a proper send-off, we fully respect his decision to depart before the end of his tenure.”

Riveiro’s last high-profile match for Pirates, as it turned out, was his side’s Nedbank Cup final defeat to Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium over the weekend.

In the league, Pirates should at worst finish second behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who now need just one point from their two remaining games to clinch the title.

Under Riveiro, Pirates won four cup titles and two runner-up finishes in the league before this season.
