SA Rugby and Spur Corporation have officially renewed and expanded their partnership, confirming a four-year extension that will see the iconic South African restaurant group supporting not just the Springboks but also the women’s, junior, and sevens national rugby teams.
This renewed collaboration reaffirms Spur’s role as the official restaurant of the Springboks, a title it first assumed in 2022. However, the deep-rooted connection between Spur and South African rugby stretches back to the 1990s, making this more than just a corporate sponsorship – it’s a continuation of a legacy steeped in South African pride and community.
Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, welcomed the extension with enthusiasm:
“As an iconic and loved local brand, Spur’s connection to SA Rugby and our teams in green and gold is one that is forged in the South African-ness of both our brands. We are delighted to extend our partnership with Spur. Their emphasis is on bringing families and friends together, which is also something we strive to do as we look forward to sharing our journey over the coming years.”
For Spur, the extension is both a strategic and heartfelt move. With over 312 local outlets and a growing international presence, including restaurants in the Middle East, Australia, Mauritius, and across Africa, the brand continues to embody the warmth and togetherness that South Africans love.
Vuyo Henda, Chief Marketing Officer at Spur Corporation, emphasised the emotional connection between the brand, the sport, and its fans:
“Spur has proudly shared in the joy, pride, and passion of South African rugby for generations. From spirited Spur Kids activations where young fans meet their rugby heroes to family tables filled with match-day excitement, our partnership with the Springboks is rooted in a deep love for the game and the nation. It’s this enduring connection that made renewing our sponsorship with SA Rugby and the Springbok teams an easy decision.
"We’re especially proud to extend our support to the women’s and junior teams – celebrating rising stars and inspiring the next generation. As the official restaurant partner, we’re behind our champions every step of the way and look forward to cheering them on in the games to come.”
The expanded sponsorship aligns with Spur’s longstanding commitment to family, sport, and youth development and supports SA Rugby’s growing focus on inclusivity and the development of future rugby talent across all divisions. The inclusion of women’s and junior teams in the partnership is a noteworthy step toward equal representation and opportunity in sport and speaks volumes about both organisations’ values.
As rugby continues to capture the hearts of South Africans – whether on a bustling match day or in a quiet moment over a meal – the Spur and SA Rugby partnership promises to fuel the fire of national pride for years to come.
