THE ABSA Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament returns for its fourth edition this week, running from Wednesday, April 30, to Saturday, May 3.
Defending champions Clapham High School head into the tournament as favourites, with 20 top schools ready to compete and wrest the trophy from their grasp.
The event forms part of the wider Wildeklawer Sport initiative, founded in 2009. Originally launched as a rugby showcase before expanding to include netball, football was added in 2022, with Louis Botha emerging as the inaugural champions.
From the outset, the soccer tournament has emphasised integrity and development. Organisers placed a strong focus on ensuring fair competition and building an event that mirrors the high standards set by the long-running Wildeklawer rugby and netball tournaments.
Starting with just eight teams in 2022, the soccer event has grown rapidly. In 2023, it doubled to 16 teams, and this year, 20 sides will feature, involving 360 players and 40 officials.
A ranking system now helps to determine which schools qualify, reflecting the tournament’s increasingly competitive nature.
The tournament also serves as a crucial platform for young talent. Scouts closely follow the action both on-site and via SuperSport Schools’ livestreams.
Beyond the football, the Absa Wildeklawer Soccer Tournament promotes community building among schools and offers young players a positive, structured environment. It has quickly become one of the highlights on Kimberley’s sporting calendar – and continues to grow in stature.
