FOR MANY young people today, stepping into adulthood is like stepping into a storm. The decisions are daunting – choosing a career path, weighing up whether to study further, take a gap year, or head straight into the workforce – all under the heavy cloud of expectations from parents, teachers, and society.
Now imagine making that decision and moving far from home to study, only to be hit by the full weight of emotional, financial, and social pressure. Managing living expenses, adapting to life on your own, and dealing with homesickness can be overwhelming. And when the rising cost of living stretches already-thin budgets to breaking point, education itself can begin to feel out of reach.
But what if someone stepped in to help? What if you could be that someone?
Last year, a powerful act of community and generosity made all the difference. Thanks to the success of the first-ever Thusa Moithuti Fundraising Golf Day, hosted at the Magersfontein Memorial Golf Club, 111 academically deserving students at Sol Plaatje University received the support they so urgently needed. Registration fees, accommodation costs, and even historical student debt were wiped away, all thanks to R750,000 raised by caring individuals who chose to make a difference.
This year, the Student Leadership at Sol Plaatje University is dreaming even bigger.
SPU’s Student Representative Council recently announced their second Annual Thusa Moithuti Bursary Fund-raising Golf Day, a bold step towards raising a whopping R3 million – funds that will directly benefit students who are academically capable but financially constrained.
This is more than just a day on the green.
It’s a call to action for companies, philanthropists, alumni, and friends to come together, enjoy a day of meaningful connection and purpose-driven sport at the historical Kimberley Golf Club, and invest in the next generation of changemakers.
Why should you play: Simply because no student should be left behind simply because they cannot financially afford to move forward.
