THE AGE OLD debate over what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object continues on Saturday when the SA Cup defending champions, the Suzuki Griquas, sitting on top of the table with a massive points difference of 227, takes a trip down to Welkom to take on the undefeated NovaVit Griffons on Saturday.
Griquas have continued to solidify their position as the top team in the SA Cup after last week’s outstanding 118-3 victory over the Border Bulldogs in East London. The defending champions were relentless and impressive, scoring 18 tries and keeping their opponents at bay with an impenetrable defensive wall.
Gurshwin Wehr’s four tries and a conversion earned him the Player of the Match award. This means that he has thus far scored seven tries after his hat-trick the week before while on debut against the Valke. Meanwhile, Dylan Maart and Gustav du Rand each scored three tries to further strengthen the team’s dominance.
The team from the Diamond City have made it clear that they are not easing off their grip on the top spot of the table. However, alongside them, all on 15 points, are the ever-threatening Airlink Pumas and the dark horse, the Griffons, who also remain unbeaten.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s match, Griquas will take the trek up to the Down Touch Investments Stadium in Welkom for their encounter against the Griffons kicking off at 3pm. No doubt, this match promises to be an exciting encounter as neither team will want to surrender their unbeaten run in the competition.
Griquas are high on confidence, and will need to build on their impressive performance in East London last week.
That victory was not just a display of sheer power; it was a demonstration of what happens when a team sticks to their game plan and trusts their tactical blueprint.
Coach and players alike were pleased with the comprehensive team effort that resulted in a 45-3 lead by halftime, which was further extended in the second half with another 11 tries.
The team is in fine form and will no doubt be looking to carry this momentum forward into their match against the Griffons.
Elsewhere in the SA Cup, the Pumas kept up their winning streak with a thrilling 46-38 victory over the Toyota Cheetahs in Nelspruit, and the Griffons comfortably dismantled the Leopards 79-10 in Welkom – this is something that Griquas will have taken into their reckoning.
Needless to say, the upcoming encounter between the Griquas and Griffons promises to be a high-stakes affair, with both teams eager to secure another victory. The Griquas' attacking prowess and depth will certainly be tested, but if their recent performances are anything to go by, the team will be ready for what is sure to be a fierce contest.
For now, the Suzuki Griquas continue to lead the way in the competition, but the pressure is on as the rest of the team look to challenge their dominance in the SA Cup.
