At the recent Northern Cape Provincial All-Styles Development Karate Trials held in Kimberley, nine karateka from the Neko Ashi Dojo emerged as a force to be reckoned with, with an impressive haul of medals.

The air was filled with anticipation at the trials as young warriors stepped onto the tatami, ready to prove their mettle. The trials, held on February 15, were designed to assess and prepare karatekas for the prestigious All-Styles National Development Championships scheduled for August.

For the nine karateka representing Neko Ashi, this was more than just a competition – it was a chance to showcase the discipline, precision, and indomitable spirit that define their dojo.

Under the watchful eye of Sensei Gilbert Isaka, a 4th Dan black belt and the driving force behind Neko Ashi Dojo, his students delivered performances that spoke volumes of their dedication. Every one of the nine competitors secured a place on the podium, amassing 10 gold, six silver, and two bronze medals across multiple divisions.

Lindo Gaju, competing in the children’s division (10-13 years), set the tone early with a stunning double-gold performance in kata (forms) and kumite (fighting). His teammate, Akhona Gaju, mirrored his success with gold in both categories, while Ameli Julius added to the tally with a gold in kumite and a silver in kata. Thando Mphohlalo and Wase Ledwaba further bolstered Neko Ashi’s medal count, with Mphohlalo securing double bronze and Ledwaba earning silver in kata and bronze in kumite.

In the Cadette division (14-15 years), Kgosi Riet’s impressive display of skill earned him a gold medal in kumite and a silver in kata. Refilwe Manyoni fought hard to claim double silver in both kata and kumite, demonstrating resilience and technical prowess. Meanwhile, Junior division (16-17 years) competitor Sisanda Gaju echoed the dojo’s dominant form by clinching gold in both kata and kumite.

The Senior and Open division (18 years and over) saw Neo Ludick stand tall as a double-gold champion, triumphing in both kata and kumite. His experience and refined technique solidified his place as a top competitor in the province.

With all nine karateka securing medals, they now stand a strong chance of being selected to represent the Northern Cape at the National Championships in August. However, their journey does not end here. Preparing for a national event comes with challenges – travel, accommodation, and the need for proper protective gear are all essential components for success.

Neko Ashi Dojo is now calling on sponsors and donors to help support these talented young karatekas as they take the next step in their competitive journey. Sensei Gilbert Isaka, deeply committed to his students’ growth, is seeking partnerships to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder their dreams.

For those interested in supporting these rising stars, donations of any kind will go a long way in helping them represent the Northern Cape with pride. Potential sponsors can contact Sensei Gilbert Isaka at 076 370 9558 or via email at gilbertmooketsiisaka@gmail.com.

As the echoes of their victories still linger in the air, the Neko Ashi athletes continue their rigorous training, eyes set firmly on the national stage.
