The Sol Plaatje University (SPU) rugby team made an unforgettable debut in the 2025 Varsity Shield when they secured a nail-biting 44-37 victory over the University of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Suzuki Park in Kimberley on Friday.
The match was a historic event as it marked the university’s first-ever appearance in the competition, and they delivered a performance worthy of the occasion.
The atmosphere at Suzuki Park was electric, with students and members of the Kimberley community rallying behind their team. Their support spurred SPU on as they battled fiercely against UKZN, with momentum swinging back and forth in a high-intensity contest.
UKZN struck first when Siso France slotted an early penalty to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. However, SPU’s Khanya Kama quickly responded with a penalty of his own to level the score.
The first half saw a flurry of action, with UKZN’s Jordan Ramsamy powering over from a rolling maul before Tumelo Papane hit back for SPU with a well-taken try. France continued his excellent kicking form, converting Wela-Aphumelele Takata’s try to keep UKZN in front.
Determined to make their mark on their home turf, SPU surged ahead with tries from Jan Potgieter and Leslie Ruiters, with Kama adding a conversion and a penalty to give the hosts a narrow 22-20 lead at halftime.
The second half maintained the high intensity, as UKZN’s Zak Smith pounced for a quick try. SPU’s Liyabona Maplanga responded with a brilliant solo effort, levelling the score at 27-27.
Jaiden Faviers then powered over for SPU, with Kama adding the extras. UKZN refused to back down, as Nhlakanipho Bithelezi crossed the line, and France showcased his kicking prowess with another penalty and a stunning drop goal to keep UKZN within striking distance at 37-34.
With the game on a knife’s edge, Faviers stepped up once again, sealing the victory with a late try under the posts. Kama’s conversion put the final touches on the thrilling 44-37 win for SPU.
This landmark achievement signals the start of an exciting new chapter for Sol Plaatje University rugby. The team demonstrated immense skill, determination, and teamwork, proving they belong on the Varsity Shield stage.
The victory not only lays the foundation for future success but also serves as a powerful testament to the spirit of hard work and community support.
SPU now shifts its focus to next week’s clash against CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology), also in Kimberley, eager to build on this remarkable debut performance.
As the journey continues, one thing is certain – Sol Plaatje University rugby has arrived, and they are here to make history.
