10 essential tips for first-timers attending the Soweto derby

Firstly, let me start off by saying, you’ll be going to the Soweto derby, which is the biggest event in the local sporting calendar, so congratulations!

But like any other first-timer, you’ll need some guidelines on how to manoeuvre your way around this life-changing event. So, here are 10 tips from yours truly.

Step 1: Wake up early – It’s very important for you to get the basic things out of the way as early as possible – eat breakfast, drink your meds, feed your pets, get petrol for the car, and all that.

Step 2: Check traffic directory – On derby day, certain routes do not operate. So, you need to familiarise yourself with the working routes in and around the stadium, and what areas you can park in.

Step 3: Don’t buy counterfeit tickets – If you did not get your ticket from a reputable source, do not go to the stadium. You’ll not be granted access, and worst-case scenario, you can be arrested for a fake ticket. Moreover, the match is already soldout, so beware scalpers and chancers this week.

Step 4: Have cold, hard cash – It is easier to deal with queues and kiosks if you have cash on you, as it gets terribly busy before the game, during half-time, and after full-time.

Step 5: Decide on your team colours – On the day, you must decide which colours you are nailing your mast to – if you are not a neutral fan. Are you a Buccaneer or Khosi? That will help with who you’ll interact with pre-match, while also instilling a sense of pride and purpose on the day.

Step 6: Know the stadium rules – There are certain items like alcohol, chairs, and weapons that are prohibited from entering the stadium.
