Former SuperSport United and Cape Town City FC midfielder Thato Mokeke has joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC after his return to the game following a few months out of action.
The club made this announcement late last week, along with announcing that they have also managed to snag two of Orlando Pirates’ rising stars along with Mokeke.
The last time Mokeke played was when he turned out for Cape Town Spurs, when they were still in the Betway Premiership. This was prior to their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Mokeke had spent five years at City, featuring in 171 games in all competitions. He then joined Spurs after leaving Cape Town City.
It is quite a coup for Upington City to secure Mokeke’s services, and the Northern Cape-based side was quick to confirm through their social media pages on Thursday that they had signed the playmaker.
“Join us as we welcome our newest Citizen. Thato Mokeke joins as a free agent,” reads the club statement.
“Thato Mokeke completed his first session with Bafana Ba Gucci today [Thursday]. He is ready for a new chapter and new goals.”

Meanwhile, the club also announced that two Orlando Pirates players Seth Green and Jabulani Mokone have joined the club on loan. The two youngsters who play in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] will be part of the Northern Cape side until the end of the current season.
“Jabulani Mokone joins on loan from Orlando Pirates DDC. Jabulani Mokone completed his first session with Bafana Ba Gucci today. He is ready to sharpen his skill set. Of concern though is that Upington City finds themselves at position 12 on the table with 18 log points. The team had started the season strongly, but currently are 13 points behind top team Durban City, and have quite a bit of ground to make up as the season progresses.
