Come on Kimberlites, the year has been tough, and I am sure you have a few days leave available to take a road trip.
Why? Well, Cape Town is gearing up to host Rugby’s Biggest Party as the HSBC SVNS series lands at the iconic DHL Stadium on December 7-8, 2024. This world-class event promises a charged atmosphere filled with thrilling rugby action, vibrant entertainment, and a unique opportunity to participate in a record-breaking dance-off.
The tournament is part of the HSBC SVNS world series, which kicks off in Dubai on November 30 and includes stops in Perth, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Los Angeles before concluding in May 2025.
Cape Town, however, is set to offer something truly extraordinary. The city’s mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, expressed his enthusiasm about the city hosting the eighth edition of this globally celebrated event.
“We are ready to welcome the world to the Cape Town leg of the HSBC SVNS series, which has been voted South Africa’s best live event for two consecutive years,” said Hill-Lewis.
“This is not just a rugby tournament; it’s a highlight of Cape Town’s festive calendar. Fans can expect a memorable experience, from the games to the incredible vibe around the city. We invite everyone to explore Cape Town and enjoy this spectacular event.”
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer emphasised the unique combination of sport and entertainment that defines the HSBC SVNS.
“This tournament offers an unforgettable experience where rugby meets music, fun, and non-stop action,” Oberholzer said.
“It features the 12 best men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams in the world, and South Africans will get the rare chance to see their Olympic bronze medallist Blitzboks playing on home turf. On top of that, we’ll attempt to break a world record for the largest group dance at a rugby event!”
Adding a local flair, Cape Town’s two-time world hip-hop champions, Street Stylers, are leading a bold attempt to set a world record for the largest Amapiano dance-off during the event.
“This is all about celebrating South Africa’s festive spirit,” said Blake Williams, founder of Street Stylers. “We’re bringing the vibes with the iconic Amapiano NoDNA JustRSA dance, which has already captivated millions online. We’re calling on fans to dress up and join us as we make history!”
To prepare for the record-breaking attempt, 10 public dance workshops will be held across Cape Town. The first session is scheduled for Saturday, November 23, at the V&A Waterfront amphitheatre from 12 noon to 1.30pm. Fans may even have the chance to meet Blitzbok players making guest appearances.
