The president of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), Mark Alexander, has issued a rallying cry to Cape Town’s rugby fans ahead of the Springbok Women’s final warm-up match on Thursday, urging them to show up in force at DHL Stadium.

The team is set to face Spain in their last game before competing in the highly anticipated WXV 2 tournament, which kicks off later this month.

Following a historic 59-17 victory over the Barbarians at the same venue earlier this month, the Springbok Women are riding a wave of momentum as they prepare to take on Spain. The match is scheduled for a 5pm kick-off, with gates opening at 3pm. Tickets are affordably priced at just R35 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

The two teams previously clashed earlier this year in Spain, where the Bok Women secured a narrow 15-13 victory, adding an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to Thursday's match.

Alexander called on South Africans to seize the opportunity to show their support, emphasising the importance of backing the women’s team not just in their athletic achievements but in the broader societal goal of gender equality in sports.

“This match is more than just a game; it’s a chance for us to stand behind our women and show our commitment to rectifying the imbalances in our society,” said Alexander.

He further highlighted the team’s dedication and hard work in preparing to represent the country on the international stage, stating, “By filling the stands and cheering them on, we not only boost their morale but also send a powerful message of unity and support for gender equality in sports.”

The Springbok Women are set to take on a strong line-up of competitors in the WXV 2 tournament, which will be hosted at both DHL Stadium and Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. The competition sees South Africa facing Japan, Australia, and Italy on September 27, and October 5 and 12 respectively.

Tickets for the WXV 2 tournament range from R35 for single tickets to R100 for a package of four adult tickets. Children under 18 can attend for just R10 if accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are sold per round and are valid for three matches over two days. They are available exclusively from Ticketmaster.

In his closing remarks, Alexander underscored the significance of the nation’s support: “Let’s come together as a nation and show our Springbok women that we believe in them and their potential. Your presence at the stadium will make a significant difference and inspire future generations of female athletes.”

With the excitement of international rugby returning to Cape Town, fans are encouraged to make their voices heard and rally behind the team as they gear up for the global stage.
