THIS past weekend at Beaconsfield Park Bowling Green Club, the Northern Cape Bowls team triumphed at the inaugural Quadrangular Champion of Champions tournament. Facing formidable teams from North West, Southern Free State, and Northern Free State, Northern Cape clinched the title of Central Districts champions.
The tournament featured top players from each district battling it out in various categories, including singles, veteran singles, pairs, mixed pairs, and fours. Spectators were treated to displays of brilliant bowling skills as the fierce competition unfolded throughout the weekend.
On Friday, Johan Beer from Southern Free State dominated the men’s singles, securing victories against all three of his opponents, while Marietjie vd Berg from the Northern Cape clinched the women’s singles title, adding to her previous year’s triumph in the triangular singles.
In the veterans category, Gert Opperman from Northern Cape won the Veteran men’s singles, while Maro Nicolaou from North West took home the Veteran women’s singles title.
The teams were up next on Saturday morning, with two rounds of games played on Saturday and the final round on Sunday. North West excelled in the pairs discipline, with Theuns Botha and Ian Nieuwoudt winning the men’s pairs and Sega Makoto and Baybee Majanaga triumphing in the women’s pairs.
The Southern Free State’s Wayne and Lara York, a husband-and-wife duo, showcased their skill by winning the mixed pairs category, outclassing a strong field of competitors who had recently competed in the BSA mixed pairs.
In the closely contested men’s fours, three teams ended with four points each, but the Northern Free State team of Ben Pieterse, Pieter Cronjé, Mark Snell, and Loffie Cronjé emerged victorious based on shot aggregate. The North West team of Magdel O'Donoghue, Amanda Bester, Linda Fuhri, and Lazuya Serfontein claimed the women’s Fours championship.
The NCB Executive team, comprising Quinton Kock, Driaan van Niekerk, René van Niekerk, and Caren vd Westhuizen, clinched the Executive Fours trophy, rounding off a successful weekend for the Northern Cape Bowls team.
In the end, the event not only showcased the high level of talent in the region but also set a new standard for future tournaments.
