Friday, July 26, marks an exciting day for St. Patrick’s Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) in Kimberley as they host their annual Winter Fest 2024 Sports Day.

Roy Adams, a representative from St. Patrick’s CBC, spoke to the DFA newspaper about the event’s significance and the school’s honoured guests: Edmund Rice Schools, from across South Africa.

Now if you are like me who had no idea who or what the Edmund Rice Schools are, then let me explain.

Inspired by the values and teachings of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, the schools are renowned educational institutions dedicated to holistic education, social justice, and the development of moral and ethical values in their students.

Blessed Edmund Rice, an Irish Catholic layman, founded the first school in Waterford, Ireland, in 1802 with a mission to provide quality education to the poor and marginalised, initially focusing on boys in Ireland.

His educational philosophy emphasises the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional growth of students.

Adams elaborated on the ethos of Edmund Rice Schools, noting that they continue to uphold their founder’s legacy by providing quality education that transcends academics. These institutions aim to instil values of compassion, justice, and service; shaping individuals committed to making a positive impact on the world.

“This year, we are the hosting school. Every year, a different school gets to host this event. Seven schools are competing here in Kimberley with roughly 400 learners, and the idea is to bring all the schools together for a winter festival that will build camaraderie between the schools and the pupils, as well as foster friendly competition. This is also a nice way of keeping ties with each other,” Adams said.

The Winter Fest 2024 promises a day filled with sporting events, teamwork, and community spirit. By allowing these students from various CBC schools to gather, the event aims to strengthen the bonds between the schools and promote the values that Edmund Rice championed.

As the festivities unfold, participants and spectators alike can look forward to a memorable day celebrating not just sports but the enduring spirit of unity and a common purpose.
