RUGBY enthusiasts are in for a treat as the Frances Baard Rugby Region gears up to host the highly-anticipated Under-21 Griquas One Day Regional Tournament on Saturday at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley.

The tournament promises to be a spectacle of skill and competition, featuring teams from the rugby regions of Logan, ZFM, Namakwa, Pixley Ka Seme, and Van Druten, all vying for the coveted Griquas Under-21 Regional Trophy.

The tournament also serves as a crucial platform for talent identification, forming part of the Under-21 Griquas trials. Aspiring young players will have the opportunity to impress selectors and potentially secure a spot on the prestigious Under-21 Griquas team.

The action-packed day kicks off at 8am on Saturday, and rugby lovers are encouraged to head to the stadium to witness the intense matches and support the budding rugby stars.

The tournament rules will ensure a fast-paced and fair competition, with matches consisting of two halves of 25 minutes each under “Running Time” regulations.

Key Tournament Rules:

  • Red cards result in immediate disqualification from further participation in the tournament.
  • Yellow card penalties will last for 5 minutes.
  • Draws will be conducted at halftime of the previous match, with the absent team forfeiting their draw options.
  • In the event of a tie in log points, points for and against will determine the standings.

Final Match Regulations:

  • If the final match ends in a draw, 5 minutes of extra time per side will be played. The first team to score will be declared the winner.
  • If the score remains tied after extra time, a coin toss will determine the champion.
  • The winning team will receive a trophy, which must be returned for safekeeping by the Union after photographs are taken.

Log Points System:

  • 4 points for a win
  • 2 points for a draw
  • 1 bonus point for scoring four or more tries
  • 1 bonus point for losing by seven points or less
