IN A SPECTACULAR finish to a perfect season, the Suzuki Griquas triumphed in the SA Cup, securing their first major trophy in a decade with a thrilling 46-24 win over their arch-rivals, the Pumas, last week Saturday.

Even a week later, the thrill of this win can still be felt in the city.

The match, held in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at Suzuki Park in Kimberley, saw Pieter Bergh’s side dominate from the outset.

The hosts stormed to a 29-0 lead within the first 25 minutes, showcasing a masterful performance that effectively decided the game early on. Despite a spirited fightback from the Pumas, the Griquas never relinquished their lead, finishing the match on a high note.

In what was an impeccable conclusion to the SA Cup tournament, Griquas emerged as the only undefeated team in the competition, capturing the championship in stunning fashion.

Griquas, dressed in white for the final, demonstrated exceptional skill and strategy in the first half, leaving the gritty Pumas team from Mpumalanga struggling to keep up. By halftime, the score stood at 29-14, with the Pumas seemingly starting to claw their way back into the contest.

In the final six minutes, Griquas found another gear, scoring two rapid tries that sealed their victory. Experienced flyhalf George Whitehead was the standout player, contributing a personal haul of 19 points through a try, four conversions, and two penalty goals.

This victory showcased the remarkable achievements possible when dedication and strategy align perfectly. For now, the Griquas will enjoy a well-deserved two-week break before gearing up once more to prepare for the Currie Cup.
