Tiny titan ignites oval track racing with passion and promise
WHILE it’s nothing strange for youngsters to enjoy the thrills of driving fast and racing cars against opponents, in almost every case these youngsters are racing on their game consoles in the comfort of their home.
But in the heart-pounding realm of oval track racing, a budding sensation from Newton Primary School is racing real cars that use real petrol and drive on real tracks.
Meet Luhan Swanepoel, an eight-year-old with a resolute determination to make a name for himself on the race track. With a cheerful demeanour and an insatiable hunger for speed, Luhan is burning up the racetrack, sharpening his skills and honing his reflexes as he practises ardently with a fervent aspiration to someday stand atop the champion’s podium.
Luhan’s love affair with life on the racetrack sprouted under the careful guidance of his father, Christo Swanepoel, who planted within the youngster a fascination for speed and control.
Speaking to the DFA in an exclusive interview, Luhan shared how the love for racing grew from humble beginnings. “My dad taught me everything about oval track racing. When I saw him racing I knew I wanted to do that too,” Luhan said.
Luhan spoke to the DFA about a recent solo run where he navigated the track without competing against other racers, his father accompanied him in the car offering invaluable guidance as the young racer manoeuvred through his laps.
“Doing my laps with my dad next to me was great,” he said enthusiastically. “He was helping me all the time, telling me what to do,” he added, his face reflecting the thrill he had experienced on the track.
When asked by the DFA about this solo run, Luhan said that he had learned a lot. “It was difficult but my dad helped me and that made it easier. I learned a lot.”
While there weren't competitors jostling for position on the track, Luhan’s determination and commitment were as fervent as if he were in a packed arena. “Every time I go around the track, I learn and get better. I really try hard during practice to get better at what I do,” he emphasised.
The thrill of getting behind the wheel fuels Luhan’s enthusiasm.
“Racing on the track is so exciting! I love going super fast and making sure I take every corner just right,” he shared, his eyes alight with the sheer joy of racing.
Acknowledging the guidance of his father, Luhan recognised the significance of continuous improvement. “My dad always helps and cheers me on. I’m lucky to have him by my side as he helps me as I try to improve with each lap,” he told the DFA.
Balancing the rigours of school with the demands of racing, is not easy, but Luhan meticulously prepares himself for each event.
“My dad makes sure my car is super ready. When it’s time to race, all I have to do is put on my gear, and my helmet, and buckle up,” he explained, underscoring the importance of preparation in his pursuit of success.
Peering into the future, Luhan harbours dreams of championship glory.
“I really want to be one of the best oval track racers. Getting trophies and being a champion is my big dream. I'll work super hard and give my all to make it happen,” he declared with a resolute determination.
