Kimberley’s Hip-Hop Dance Crew out to show the world some Culture

THE DANCE community is buzzing with excitement after Culture, an 11-member hip-hop dance ensemble from Kimberley, has recently returned from the Hip-Hop Unite World Championships in Obidos, Portugal, held between October 23 and 29.

Culture's participation in this esteemed global event demonstrates their skill, commitment, and the steadfast encouragement provided by their mentors and the Kimberley community.

The dance ensemble, under the leadership of Noleen and Liam Abrahams, symbolises the essence of hip-hop and reflects the spirit of unity and resilience that brings pride to Kimberley. Training at the Noleen Andrews School of Dance, a local studio in the city, the group secured their place on the global platform after securing third place at the South African sport aerobics, fitness, and hip-hop championships in Cape Town in June.

The group’s journey to the Hip-Hop Unite World Championships was no easy feat, as they had to prove their mettle against some of the best dance crews in South Africa. Culture’s electrifying performances at the national championships showcased their innovation and mastery of hip-hop, and thereby securing their place at the world championships.

This prestigious international competition saw Culture go head-to-head with 1,100 dancers from around the world. The intensity, creativity, and sheer energy of the event left audiences in awe.

Kimberlites rallied behind their beloved dance crew, recognising the hard work, sweat, and determination that went into Culture reaching this global platform.

The MEC of Sports, Arts, and Culture Desery Fienies, personally visited Kimberley Airport to wish the Culture crew good luck before their departure. It was a touching moment as the athletes, along with their coaches and supporters, prepared for their journey to Portugal.

This prestigious international competition saw Culture go head-to-head with 1,100 dancers from around the world. The intensity, creativity, and sheer energy of the event left audiences in awe.

The athletes who represented Kimberley with such grace and flair included Skyler Daniels, Eliz-Mari Stegmann, Zoe Abrahams, Hannah Abrahams, Kirsty Andrews, Tatum Bocks, and Jade-Lynn Koopman. Noleen Abrahams, the coach and president of NCSAFF, played a pivotal role in nurturing their talent, along with her co-coach, Liam Abrahams.

Noleen Abrahams said that the mega-crew consisted of 19 teams. Culture took part in the mega crew adult division, danced in the preliminary round, and qualified for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for the finals, as only eight teams could go through to the finals. However, it has to be said that the crew pitched up on the day and put on one of their best displays. The coach said she is very proud of what they achieved.

Just qualifying for such a world tournament is already an awesome achievement, and no doubt the dancers gained a lot of experience by learning the different dance cultures from all the different countries.

The dance duo of Liam Abrahams and Carla Whitten, known as Nasty, danced in the preliminary round consisting of 28 teams. Unfortunately, they too did not qualify for the semi-finals, as only 12 teams could qualify. However, holding nothing back, they did South Africa proud with the performance they put in.

Notably absent from the group's return celebration were Carla Whitten, Isabella Struwig, and Caitlin Kuhn, who were unable to attend due to prior commitments. However, their contributions and dedication to the culture's journey are acknowledged and celebrated.

Culture and Nasty’s participation at this prestigious competition shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration, not only for Kimberley but for all those who aspire to achieve greatness through the art of dance.

Culture has not just represented Kimberley on the world stage; they have become ambassadors of talent, unity, and perseverance.
