Suspended SAPS deputy national police commissioner for crime detection, Lt-Gen. Shadrack Sibiya, returns to the hot seat on Friday with admissions already reshaping the narrative at the Madlanga Commission.

Day three of his testimony follows a concession under oath that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was disbanded without any review of its work and without a written order formally shutting it down.

Testifying in Pretoria, Sibiya acknowledged that the Marais report which he had previously cited as justification makes no recommendation to dissolve the unit.

He also failed to produce a single document explicitly instructing that the PKTT be disestablished.

The admission has intensified scrutiny over the abrupt collapse of a unit tasked with probing politically motivated assassination cases that strike at the core of democratic stability.

Thursday’s proceedings took a dramatic turn when Sibiya accused a senior police boss, Lt-Gen. Khosi Senthumule, of allegedly benefiting financially from controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The hearing is underway.
