Brigadier Rachel Matjeng to continue with her testimony on Friday after admitting to the Madlanga Commission on Thursday that the tender tycoon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala used to shower her with money and gifts but denied they were bribes.
Matjeng told the commission that she was in a romantic relationship with Matlala.
Matlala, who is facing an attempted murder charge, has emerged during the commission’s hearings as a key figure in allegations of widespread police corruption.
Matjeng rejected claims that she accepted R300,000 in return for helping Matlala’s company secure a lucrative R360-million SAPS contract.
That contract, awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District, was later scrapped after being ruled irregular and corrupt.
She maintained before the commission that the funds she received from Matlala were not a bribe, but gifts exchanged within a romantic relationship, which she said pre-dated the awarding of the tender by several years.
The commission continues.
