Eight Milnerton High School learners charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm are set to appear at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

This comes after a disturbing incident on October 16, 2025, in which a 16-year-old Grade 10 learner was brutally assaulted by his peers.

The video footage, shared widely on social media, showed the learner being slapped, punched, and humiliated by a group of students allegedly belonging to the school’s First Team Rugby squad.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, said all were released following their first court appearance on October 23, 2025.

"At the time, all eight were released on bail and warning, as they had fixed addresses, no previous convictions, and no pending cases or warrants of arrest."

He said the court imposed strict conditions on the bail, including prohibitions against contacting complainants or witnesses, entering the school premises, intimidating witnesses, or engaging in criminal activity.

The learners were also required to surrender their cellphones and PINs, with five handed over immediately and one outstanding, which was to be submitted within 24 hours to the investigating officer.

“They were ordered to study at home, and the Western Cape Department of Education provided an alternative venue for them to write exams,” said Ntabazalila.
