The Department of Social Development (DSD) has moved to calm fears among grant beneficiaries after false claims circulated on social media suggesting that the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is about to be terminated.
The department denied the claims, describing them as misinformation with no basis in any government decision.
“The Department wishes to categorically state that these claims are false. There is no such decision, announcement or directive from the Department or government regarding the termination of the SRD.”
According to the DSD, videos and graphics currently being shared online are misleading the public and have the potential to cause unnecessary panic among social grant beneficiaries who rely on the support.
The department also warned that some of the misleading content unlawfully uses official government branding and images of the Minister.
“The Department further cautions that it is unlawful to use the official image of the Minister and use of the Department’s logo without authorisation, particularly for the purpose of spreading misinformation,” the DSD said.
“Such actions are misleading and constitute a misrepresentation of government communication.”
The DSD urged members of the public to ignore unverified information and rely only on official government platforms for updates on social grants.
“Members of the public are urged to disregard these videos and rely only on verified information issued through official government communication platforms,” the department said.
“DSD strongly discourages the creation and circulation of fake news that causes unnecessary panic and distress among social grant beneficiaries.”
Official information on social grants, the department said, is published through the Department of Social Development’s official website, SASSA and NDA platforms, verified government social media pages, and the DSD WhatsApp Channel.
