Three suspects were shot and killed by police on the N12 road on Wednesday following a high-speed chase.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects had just robbed a courier vehicle in Tokoza before being pursued.
“The police operationalised information about the suspects, who were driving a silver Corolla,” Nevhuhulwi said.
“They were spotted on Kliprivier Road joining the N12 towards Soweto. When police tried to stop them, they sped off, leading to a high-speed chase and shootout.”
The vehicle eventually came to a standstill on the N12 between Xavier and the Soweto off-ramp.
Three suspects were declared dead at the scene, while one sustained injuries.
Police recovered two firearms and some of the suspected stolen goods from the vehicle.
Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, praised the combined efforts of multiple units, including the National Counter Intelligence, Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, and private security companies.
