Authorities say veld fires that threatened homes in Mossel Bay are under control, but firefighting teams remain fully deployed to monitor hotspots and prevent flare-ups.

In an update issued at 13:54 on Thursday, crews confirmed they are still active in Aalwyndal, Island View, Vakansieplaas and along parts of the N2.

It is reported that the fires, which broke out in the Aalwyndal area on 5 January, spread rapidly due to dry conditions and strong winds, prompting evacuations, road closures and aerial water bombing.

Several structures and vehicles were damaged, particularly in Vakansieplaas, while nearby areas, including Island View, were placed on evacuation alert.

Garden Route District Fire Chief Deon Stoffels says, “The ongoing drought in the district posed significant challenges for fire crews battling the blaze. Firefighting resources remain fully deployed, with no teams standing down. The focus remains on extinguishing hotspots, securing fire lines and preventing flare-ups, particularly as weather forecasts indicate increased wind speeds later in the day.”

Authorities confirmed that no further structural or property losses have been recorded since 6 January. No additional evacuations have taken place, and residents who were displaced earlier have since been allowed to return to their homes.

Three firefighters sustained injuries during the operations, one of whom was hospitalised for smoke inhalation and is expected to be discharged. A civilian was also injured in Vakansieplaas. No further injuries have been reported.

Humanitarian relief and psychosocial support are being provided to affected families through the Mossel Bay Municipality in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and various partner organisations.

Road access control remains in place in affected areas, with a strong SAPS presence to ensure safety. The public has been urged to avoid the Aalwyndal area and not to interfere with ongoing emergency operations as crews continue monitoring conditions.
