In a significant operation aimed at combating the growing crisis of hijacked buildings, Gauteng arrested a man suspected of hijacking a mansion in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
This operation unfolded on Thursday after City of Johannesburg officials targeted a notorious hijacked mansion located on the prestigious Grosvenor Road.
The grand residence, once a symbol of affluent living, is now reported to be home to over 70 families who live there unlawfully. Many of these families are paying rent to an alleged building hijacker.

During the raid, law enforcement successfully apprehended a suspect believed to be at the centre of the hijacking operation, and a firearm along with live ammunition was confiscated from the scene. These discoveries add a layer of severity to the ongoing issues surrounding illegal property dealings in the area.

As part of the operation, illegal electricity and water connections were discovered and subsequently disconnected. This act of enforcement serves to restore lawful control over the property, ensuring that municipal services are no longer subverted by criminal activities.

Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku said the City has reinforced its commitment to tackling property hijacking.
"This arrest represents a decisive enforcement outcome and reinforces the City’s zero-tolerance stance on property hijacking. Lawlessness will be confronted, and criminal networks will be systematically dismantled," he said.
