Two men lost their lives after an armed suspect unleashed a hail of bullets at a tavern in  Embalenhle, Mpumalanga.

The shooting occurred around 11pm on New Year's Day.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said authorities were alerted by community members about a shooting at a tavern in Extension 15.

"Upon arrival at the scene, police found two male victims lying on the ground and covered with blankets, while community members were gathered outside the premises. Both victims were later identified as residents of Embalenhle," said Mdhluli.

Mdhluli said the armed suspect arrived at the tavern, allegedly drew a firearm, and fired shots, then left the scene only to return moments later.

"It was during his return when he reportedly shot both victims. It is also alleged that he randomly fired some shots as he fled the scene."

Witnesses described the suspect as wearing a distinctive white jacket, which could aid in identifying him as police launch an urgent manhunt. The motive for the killing is not yet known.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, the police have initiated a 72-Hour Plan designed to capture the assailant as swiftly as possible. Police are appealing to anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

Anyone with information that may assist in tracing the suspect is urged to contact Detective Captain Fanie Sindane on 077 429 6817 or 017 631 8024. Meanwhile, the acting provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed grave concern regarding recent incidents of violence in taverns.

"We continue to plead with liquor traders to ensure that they comply with safety regulations in their respective businesses. In most instances like few days back, some traders were not happy when we raided their places, but our aim was and is to ensure safety for everyone, " said Mkhwanazi.
