A Gauteng motorist was killed after a brick was hurled from an overpass on the N1 South, resulting in a fatal accident.

The deadly incident took place around midnight between the Maraisburg and N17 off-ramp on Tuesday.

According to Arrive Alive, a silver Toyota was struck directly by the thrown brick, which shattered the vehicle's windshield and inflicted fatal injuries on the driver.

Despite the rapid response of paramedics, the motorist was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

Arrive Alive said this was not an isolated incident because in June 2025, a similar incident was reported where a car was hit with a brick on the same bridge.

"How many more lives must be shattered before meaningful action – like increased patrols, barriers, or surveillance – puts an end to these cowardly attacks?"

"Picture it, [you are] heading home on a familiar highway, perhaps reflecting on the year ending, only for a random act of malice from above to steal everything in a split second. A family now faces the new year without their loved one, holidays forever tainted by grief," said the organisation.

Arrive Alive said the absence of operational streetlights on the N1 South from 14th Avenue further compounds the risks in this poorly lit area, making it an even simpler target for that intent on causing harm.

In response to this horrific incident, authorities are urged to treat this matter with the utmost urgency.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim's family and friends. You are not alone in this pain – an entire community mourns with you."
