Two men lost their lives after a brutal ambush by armed suspects hiding in the bushes along the Nyongane Main Road in Hazyview, Mpumalanga.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 5:30pm.
The victims were travelling towards Nyongane when they were unexpectedly targeted by an unknown number of attackers hiding in nearby bushes.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the shooting also left a woman in hospital, where she is in critical condition. Fortunately, a two-year-old child, who was also in the vehicle, remarkably emerged unscathed amidst the chaos.
"The suspects allegedly opened fire on the vehicle. The driver managed to continue driving for approximately 200 metres before colliding with another vehicle from behind and coming to a stop," said Ndubane.
"The suspects, who were on foot, then approached the vehicle and shot the occupants at close range, killing the driver and his male passenger instantly. The injured woman is believed to be the driver’s wife."
Ndubane added that a 72-hour activation plan has been implemented, and all relevant role players attended the scene.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial police commissioner, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “We cannot live in a society where people open fire and kill others in broad daylight, while also endangering the life of an innocent minor.
