Motorists may finally get a break at the pumps in January, as a stronger rand and falling global oil prices are set to ease the burden on South African drivers, with petrol and diesel prices expected to drop.
According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund, both grades of petrol are projected to fall by between 49 cents and 54 cents per litre, while diesel is set to see even steeper cuts of between R1.26 and R1.38 per litre.
The projected fuel price drops come as the rand strengthens, helping to offset the impact of rising global oil costs on local motorists. Following December’s sharp increases of 29 cents per litre for petrol and up to 85 cents for diesel, these reductions are expected to provide drivers with much-needed relief at the pumps.
Motorists are not the only ones set to benefit. Paraffin prices are also expected to fall by about R1 per litre during the same period.
The Department of Mineral and Energy Resources is expected to release the official fuel price adjustments ahead of the first Wednesday of the new year, giving South Africans a clearer picture of the revised costs.
