A taxi driver in Newcastle was arrested after attempting to flee on foot during a festive season roadblock, an incident that has since been widely shared in a viral video on social media.

The arrest forms part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements’ intensified #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation.

According to MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the incident demonstrated the effectiveness of the province’s Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), which has adopted a zero tolerance approach to traffic law violations.

The MEC said the arrest followed a surge in traffic volumes as holidaymakers start returning home after spending Christmas in the province.

“This morning we are observing many visitors returning home after spending quality time in various parts of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said, adding that “between 6am and 7am we recorded more than 600 cars passing through the Mariannhill Toll Plaza.”

Duma emphasised that road safety remains a priority for both residents and visitors. “Throughout the festive season we are ensuring the safety of national and international visitors on our roads,” he said. “Equally, we are prioritising the safety of the people of this province who are using our road networks.”

The MEC warned motorists that law enforcement agencies would show no leniency. “We warn motorists of zero tolerance against anyone violating the National Road Traffic Act,” he said.

In Newcastle, RTI arrests over the weekend reached 100. Those arrested included individuals from a range of professions, among them “a traditional healer, phlebotomist, policeman, two minibus taxi drivers, and two teachers.”

By 6pm on Sunday, RTI officers had already arrested 29 motorists on drunk driving charges. The taxi driver seen in the viral video was among those arrested. “A taxi driver tried to run away on foot but was quickly cornered by our energetic team,” Duma said.

He added that three individuals who attempted to interfere with the arrests were also taken into custody. “Three unruly individuals who tried to stop RTI from arresting drunk motorists were quickly arrested,” the MEC said.

Duma praised interdepartmental cooperation, thanking “the SAPS for the enduring partnership” and acknowledging “our working relationship with Newcastle Traffic Department and the Department of Health.”
