A 56-year-old man has died after he was reportedly bitten by a Cape cobra while resting outdoors on Christmas Day, according to Boland Snake Removals 24/7 and Pest Control.

The incident is said to have occurred near the town of Zastron in the Free State, where the man, identified as Seboka Albert, was allegedly resting in the shade under a tree when the snake slithered over his arm.

According to the account, Albert startled awake and moved suddenly, prompting the Cape cobra to bite him on the top of his left hand.

Paramedics were called to the scene and transported him to Zastron Hospital. At the time, he reportedly complained of severe burning pain in his hand but did not display other obvious neurotoxic symptoms.

Albert was later intubated and transferred by ambulance to Bloemfontein Hospital for further medical treatment.

In a follow-up post, Boland Snake Removals 24/7 and Pest Control said Albert died on arrival at the Bloemfontein facility, allegedly due to the neurotoxic effects associated with a Cape cobra bite. The post further stated that antivenom for Naja nivea bites was available at the hospital.

These details have not yet been independently confirmed by hospital authorities, emergency medical services or provincial health officials. No official cause of death has been released.

Cape cobras are regarded as one of South Africa’s most dangerous snake species. Previous Cape Argus reports have warned that their venom is highly toxic and can affect the nervous system, potentially leading to paralysis and breathing difficulties if medical treatment is delayed. The newspaper has also reported that bites may initially present with limited symptoms, which can worsen rapidly, underscoring the importance of urgent medical care and close monitoring in suspected cases.

Albert was remembered in social media tributes following news of his death, with condolences extended to his family and loved ones.
