Department of Social Development investigates alarming videos of children drinking alcohol

The Department of Social Development has expressed concerns following a series of videos that have surfaced on social media showing young children openly consuming alcohol in the presence of adults.

In an incident that has since commanded attention, children believed to be between the ages of five and 12 can be seen freely drinking alcohol while elderly people look on.

Many have expressed outrage on social media, citing that this behaviour has been enabled by parents who glorify substance abuse in front of young children.

The department said it is investigating the incident and encourages witnesses or anyone with information about its location to come forward and report what they encountered.

This statement also emphasises the severe impact of certain circumstances on individuals, families, and communities. It calls on parents, carers, and all family members to adhere to their duty of vigilance and protection during this challenging time.

The Department of Social Development says it is consistent in maintaining the Children's Act (38 of 2005), which aims to promote the rights and protection of children.

Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe has called for a collective effort to address the detrimental impact of excessive alcohol consumption, particularly during the festive season.

I urge all South Africans to avoid excessive alcohol use and to say no to drugs during the festive season and beyond. Alcohol and drugs rob families of precious moments, fuel violence, contribute to road fatalities and derail the future of our children and youth. To the youth of South Africa, choose fun, games, sport and quality family time during this festive period and not alcohol or drugs. You are precious, and your future matters. Staying sober helps you enjoy the festive season safely, said Tolashe.

Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta also condemned a viral video revealing that the department is investigating the incident.
