A 37-year-old taxi owner has been arrested after a 29-year-old man was allegedly dragged to death by a vehicle during a soccer match in Ga-Dikgale, Limpopo.
The incident occurred at about 4.12 pm on Thursday at a soccer ground in Ga-Dikgale, within the Sebayeng policing area.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers responded to reports that a soccer spectator had been dragged by a motor vehicle during a match.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local clinic before being transferred by ambulance to Mankweng Hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.
According to preliminary information, an argument broke out among spectators, during which the victim’s bag was allegedly taken and placed inside the suspect’s taxi.
“The deceased reportedly approached the taxi driver and pleaded with him to return his bag. The driver allegedly refused and drove off,” Ledwaba said.
The victim then attempted to stop the vehicle by standing in front of it. He reportedly fell to the ground, was knocked down and dragged by the taxi until it eventually came to a stop on the R81 road.
Police registered a case of murder and arrested the suspect, who is believed to be the owner of the taxi involved. The vehicle has been seized as part of the investigation.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 December 2025, on a charge of murder.
Police investigations are continuing.
