Mpumalanga has impounded 2,300 vehicles during intensified festive season law enforcement operations aimed at improving road safety across the province.

The Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, has commended the Mpumalanga Transport Inspectorate for ramping up law enforcement between 1 and 23 December 2025.

During this period, more than 2,300 vehicles were impounded for contravening the National Land Transport Act, No. 5 of 2009, and other road traffic legislation.

The enforcement forms part of the department’s Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities, and lawlessness on the province’s roads.

The impounded vehicles included public transport vehicles operating without valid permits, unroadworthy vehicles, overloaded vehicles, as well as those found to be in violation of operating conditions and safety requirements.

Thomo said the department remained firm in its commitment to enforcing compliance and protecting the lives of road users.

“The impoundment of more than 2,300 vehicles sends a clear and unequivocal message that lawlessness on our roads will not be tolerated. Our primary responsibility is to safeguard the lives of road users , and we will continue to act decisively against those who undermine road safety,” said Thomo.

He also applauded members of the Mpumalanga Transport Inspectorate for their dedication and willingness to work under difficult conditions during the busy festive period.

“I wish to commend our Transport Inspectorate for their tireless efforts. Their presence on our roads is critical in ensuring compliance, restoring order and preventing unnecessary loss of life, particularly during this busy festive period,” he added.

The MEC further issued a stern warning to motorists and public transport operators to comply with road traffic laws, ensure that vehicles are roadworthy and operate within the confines of the law.

He said law enforcement operations would continue throughout the festive season and beyond, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, to ensure safer mobility for all road users in Mpumalanga.
