Police in Limpopo have launched an investigation after a tractor driver was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded river at Rankin’s Pass in the Waterberg District.
The incident occurred on Monday, 22 December 2025, at about 17:30 near Tweestroom, when a 40-year-old man driving a tractor attempted to cross a low-water bridge that was submerged following heavy rains.
According to police, the driver’s employer alerted officers at Rankin’s Pass after receiving information that the employee was approaching the flooded bridge. It is alleged that the driver tried to cross but misjudged the width of the bridge, causing the tractor to veer off and plunge into the flooded river.
The man was reportedly never seen again after the tractor was swept away by the strong current.
Search and rescue teams were immediately activated and conducted an extensive search of the area, but the driver could not be located.
Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has urged motorists to avoid crossing flooded rivers, low-water bridges and roads covered by water.
“No destination is worth risking your life,” Hadebe warned.
Police said the search operation remains ongoing, and investigations into the incident are continuing.
