The Hawks have arrested a third suspect in connection with the murder of Gqeberha public prosecutor Tracy Brown, who was killed near her home in August this year.

The 33-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday evening on the N1 near Bloemfontein following what the Hawks described as a coordinated, intelligence-driven interprovincial operation.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the suspect was believed to be attempting to evade arrest by fleeing the Eastern Cape.

“The arrest followed verified operational intelligence indicating that the suspect was on the move in an attempt to evade justice,” Mhlakuvana said.

The suspect is the third person to be arrested in the murder of Brown, 42. Two other suspects were arrested in September and have remained in custody since then.

The operation involved members from the Hawks’ Economic Protected Resources unit, the National Priority Violent Crime unit, as well as the Bloemfontein Flying Squad and K9 unit.

According to the Hawks, the suspect was immediately detained at Welkom police station for processing. Three cellular phones were found in his possession and have been seized for further investigation.

Further inquiries revealed that the suspect is also wanted in connection with an attempted murder case registered at Kwazakhele police station in Gqeberha.

He is expected to make his first court appearance at the Gqeberha New Law Courts on Wednesday.

The Hawks’ acting Eastern Cape provincial head, Brigadier Venessa Shantelle Hastings, praised the teams involved for their collaboration, saying the arrest demonstrated strong investigative leadership and operational coordination.

Brown’s murder sparked widespread outrage within the legal fraternity and renewed concerns about the safety of prosecutors and justice officials.

The investigation continues.
