Three males are reported missing after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away during heavy rain on Longacres Drive in the Amanzimtoti area, south of Durban, on Sunday night.
Preliminary reports indicate that there were five occupants in the vehicle, two of whom managed to escape after the car was washed off a low-level bridge.
According to Garrith Jamieson, managing director of ALS Paramedics, family members confirmed that the five males were on their way home around midnight when they attempted to cross the bridge and the vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.
The South African Police Service, ALS Paramedics, search and rescue teams, and Amanzimtoti SAPS are on the scene, and a search operation is under way.
“SAPS and search and rescue teams are formulating a plan to begin the search for what are believed to be the missing males,” said Jamieson.
