The families of two men, who went missing after floodwaters swept away their vehicle in Amanzimtoti on Sunday, are mourning after their bodies were recovered by search and rescue teams led by the police.

ALS Paramedics confirmed that the bodies had been recovered on Monday afternoon after an extensive search was launched by SAPS Search and Rescue K9 unit and other teams. One man remains missing.

It was reported earlier that five men had been travelling home around midnight when they attempted to cross a low-level bridge amid heavy rain. While two of the men managed to escape, the vehicle was swept away. The badly damaged vehicle was recovered several metres downstream from the bridge.

Relatives of the men gathered at the scene on Monday as the search teams carried out their work. In a video from the scene, grieving women can be heard sobbing as one of the bodies was recovered.

One of the men, who escaped from the vehicle, told Newzroom Afrika, that the vehicle stalled as they were travelling across the bridge.

They had attempted to push it, when one of the men was swept away.

“As we tried to push the vehicle, (another man) was swept away by the strong river current, and the car was then carried away by the floodwaters. We had not been warned that there would be floods.”
