Chaotic scenes erupted in Kwanokuthula, just outside Plettenberg Bay on Sunday after deputy mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi allegedly hoisted a handgun above her head and fired it into the air, all while a large crowd, including children, looked on.
In a video seen by the Cape Argus, Kolwapi is dancing in the middle of a crowd on Sajini Street before raising the gun and randomly shooting into the air. Children can be seen milling about and covering their ears as bystanders continued to dance.
A case has been opened against Kolwapi at the Kwanokuthula police station.
Police spokesman Sergeant Chris Spies stated that the incident is being investigated as a case of pointing a firearm.
"According to reports available, Kwanokuthula police members visited a premises after a video of the incident was circulated on social media," Spies said.
"The investigation into this incident is at an early stage, and no arrests have been made yet.
"The police are not in a position to divulge particulars of individuals involved at this stage."
It is understood that the celebrations were related to her son finishing matric this year, a significant milestone in South Africa.
The community had gathered to celebrate this achievement, but the festivities took a dangerous turn when Kolwapi's actions raised alarms. Kolwapi was approached for comment, but by the time of publication, no response had been received from her office.
