The family of Warrick “Warras” Stock say they are devastated by the “senseless” killing of the respected DJ, media personality and businessman, describing his death as an unimaginable loss that has left them broken.

In a statement released on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Stock family said they learned of the “tragic and untimely passing” of DJ Warras with “indescribable heartbreak, deep sorrow, and overwhelming shock”.

DJ Warras was shot dead in Johannesburg’s CBD on Tuesday, December 16, after being approached by a suspect while leaving a building near the Carlton Centre. Police have confirmed that video footage shows a short man with dreadlocks opening fire shortly after noon before fleeing the scene on foot. The motive for the killing remains unclear, and no arrests have been made, with police continuing to investigate all possible leads.

“The senseless nature of his passing has left his family devastated, broken, and struggling to imagine a world without him.”

The 40-year-old, affectionately known as DJ Warras and also as “The Shady Lurker”, was described as a devoted son, loving and proud father, and a cherished brother and uncle.

“Warrick was the heart and anchor of his family,” the statement read. “He brought light, laughter, and strength into every space he occupied. His influence and kindness extended far beyond his home, and he was deeply loved by his friends, colleagues, and the wider South African entertainment community.”

The family confirmed that Stock is survived by his three young children, his mother and his siblings, whose lives they say have been “irrevocably changed” by his death.

As they begin the process of mourning, the family appealed for privacy and compassion, while also urging that police be allowed to carry out their investigation.

“They humbly ask for privacy, compassion, and understanding during this unimaginably difficult time,” the statement said. “They also respectfully request that the South African Police Service be given the space and support needed to thoroughly investigate this tragic crime, so that justice may be served.”

The family said they are not yet in a position to appoint a spokesperson and asked to be kept in the thoughts and prayers of South Africans.

They also expressed gratitude for the messages of support received since news of Stock’s death broke.

“The Stock family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, messages of support, and condolences received. Your kindness, compassion, and solidarity have brought moments of comfort during an incredibly dark time,” the statement said.

Details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared at a later stage.

“With love, gratitude, and broken hearts,” the family concluded.
