Stilfontein police stop potential carnage on freeway.

The South African Police Service (Saps) in Stilfontein, in the North West discovered and seized a large quantity of explosives hidden in a vehicle travelling on the N12 between Stilfontein and Klerksdorp during Operation Shanela.
Police stopped the vehicle as part of a routine roadblock, and upon searching it, uncovered six bags containing explosives and explosive accessories.
Police spokesperson Constable Thuto Bobelo confirmed the details. She said that the haul included an estimated 150 shocktube detonator assemblies, nearly 40 electric shocktube initiators, and five blasting cartridges.
A bomb technician was called to the scene to safely package and seal the explosives. Bobelo emphasised the importance of vigilance in preventing potential disasters.
"Three male suspects, aged between 41 and 48, were immediately arrested for possession of explosives according to the Explosives Act, 26 of 1956, section 28(1)," she said.
The arrested men are expected to appear before the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday, December 15. Bobelo also highlighted the police’s commitment to public safety.
"The police will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure a safer festive season."
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo commended the team for their diligence, noting that proactive operations like these were crucial to preventing potentially deadly incidents during the holiday period.
