A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal attack on 77-year-old farmer Attie Mahne in the Tolwe policing area.
Provincial police spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the 30-year-old man was apprehended during the early hours of Thursday at Shongoane 01 in the Lephalale area. His arrest comes just two days after the first suspect was nabbed on Tuesday.
Mahne was found tied up and unconscious inside his farmhouse during a robbery at the weekend. Emergency medical services certified him dead at the scene.
A firearm reported stolen during the incident has since been recovered.
According to police, the latest arrest resulted from a coordinated operation involving the provincial murder and robbery unit, detectives from Tolwe and Mokopane, and private security companies Bosbeld Misdaad Ondersoeke and Bosveld Plaasbeveiliging.
The second suspect is expected to appear in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
On Wednesday, IOL reported that the first suspect, a 28-year-old man, had been arrested in connection with the brutal farm murder of the 77-year-old Limpopo farmer during a violent home invasion at his farm near Baltimore in the Tolwe policing area.
Limpopo police confirmed that the first suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday following an intensive manhunt led by the provincial murder and robbery unit, Tolwe detectives, Bosbeld Misdaad Ondersoeke and the Bosveld Plaasbeveiliging security company.
Mahne was attacked on Saturday at around 4 pm after leaving the farmhouse to check on his cattle. Police said two intruders entered the home during that time and tied up his wife at knifepoint.
When Mahne returned, he was overpowered, bound, and severely assaulted before the assailants fled with several stolen items, including a firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash.
